Is DIY Lip Gloss Safe for Kids? A Straight Answer
Yes — if the ingredients are right. Here's what to look for in a kids' lip gloss kit.
DIY lip gloss kits are one of the most popular tween activities going — but not all kits are created equal. Here's how to tell a safe one from a toy that just looks like makeup.
Lip gloss is a cosmetic, so ingredients matter. The one thing regulators are strict about is color: only FDA-approved colorants that are permitted for lips may be used. Our kits use only lip-safe pigments (iron oxides, titanium dioxide, mica) and cosmetic flavor oils — no parabens, no phthalates.
Read the label. A safe kit lists its ingredients (INCI) right on the pack and comes from a real business with a real address. Vague "non-toxic" with no ingredient list is a red flag.
Bedazzle the tube, not the gloss. Gems and charms are for decorating the outside of the tube — never mixed into the gloss. Any glitter that touches lips should be lip-safe cosmetic glitter, not craft glitter.
A little adult help. The only step that needs a grown-up is gently warming the base. Everything else — mixing, coloring, pouring, decorating — is all yours.
Our Bedazzle-Your-Own Kit was built to this standard, with the ingredients printed right on the box.
